Buying s/h items you get no guarantee and generally have to travel out of your way, so you would offer a low price unless you desperately wanted the items. Its how it is with everything.

EDIT: Cant spell, and strange bungle I was going to use that phrase = ].

I think people are just opportunistic - they see someone selling and think they can grab a bargain.

The other side of the coin tho - If I buy a new set of calipers from Minispares - they are new, have not been sitting around and potentially corroded inside etc (like any used part could be). There is a guarantee on the new ones, Minispares are a reputed supplier - wont steal your money (not saying that you will, but it does happen on forums). For this - I reckon buying second hand should attract a good discount, depending on age and condition, anywhere between 50% down to 30% off would be about right for newish stuff, up to 70% for older tattier stuff. Then when something is rare, original and hard to get - may be worth more than normal retail prices.

At least when you get really low offers you know people are interested in what you are selling, you will just have to wait for the right offer.

Its easy to give a low offer, the worst that could happen is you say no and you don't get to buy something for really cheap

and every so often people do get bargains.

I heard of an older couple selling their sons 'old junk' out of their garage - had some Escort motors, asked for offers.

Some lucky person turned up - offered $200 and walked away with one BDA Engine all complete ready to use and another all in parts.

I guess if the person doesnt know what they are selling and what they are worth - bargains can be had!

Things are worth what somone is prepared to pay. Quick sale/quick cash is what somepeople want. Others hold out for stronger money.

Thing is with that you will want to put a reserve on otherwise you could still end up giving them away. You could get lucky though but its a gamble.

A guy was selling a set of subs and an amp for £240. It wasnt selling with no bids so at the end of the auction i sent a message offering £60 expecting to be rejected. 2 weeks later i got a message that he was off to uni in 3 days time and do i still want them at £60. Considering at £240 it was at about 75% less than shop prices so was cheap as it was.

Good things come to those who wait, oh and it sometimes helps to be cheeky. :-

The seller is always in control. If they don't like the deal offered just say NO.

I think the saying Bungle uses is close to: If you don't ask, you have an automatic No.
