Right then I need some help for awhile now iv'e been getting engine oil onto the cooling fan and hence into the rad, so this weekend i thought I would sort it out so I took off the timing cover cleaned it up put a new seal in(though it wasn't leaking) cleaned the mating surface put new gasket on hylomar put it all back together and still it leaks oil but I think its the otherside of the plate and dripping down on the tin cover flange. So to my question HOW does the oil get into the fan? Its definately not the seal thats leaking Thanks in advance J.D.

Other possibilities I can think of:
- back plate gets pushed away from the block due to too long screws
- the rivet that closes the oilway in the head is leaking

Thanks for replying which screws would be to long and what rivet in the head would make it run down the flange and where do i look for the leak can i see it from the thermostat end I only used the screws that came with the cover but i did notice that one of them was slightly shorter where should I have used that one

The screws that hold the cover. If you put oo long ones in (on the top), they push the plaste (&cover) away from the engine, causing a leak.

The rivet is behind the thermostate housing, on the lower end of the head. It's bit hard to see on the assembled engine:

And just as I'm typing this; another possibility could be a blown half-moon seal. This one is behind the plate the timing cover bolts on, and between engine & gearbox. And the speedo drive could be possible too.

I suggest you carefully and thoroughly clean the engine and watch where the oil is coming from - maybe thats an easyer approach than just fixing every possible seal. Which costs time and money. Try to locate the leak andthen fix it. :) Good luck!!

Cheers,
Jan

Thanks allot for the clear picture of the head i didnt know that was there, and it seems to be in that area dripping down the back of the engine and down the flange of the timing case.I will be driving it on tues so I will have a look in that area,if it is the rivet what can i do will the head need to come off?The half moon seal seems to be ok as does the speedo case I have cleaned everything so should be able to trace it (I hope) Also i have put a piece of alloy thin plate above the pot joint just incase the oil is dripping onto it and flinging it into the fan so we will see on that one thanks again for all your help.J.D

right drove it today and it is still flinging oil into the fan (sigh) its really peeing me off now its not coming from the seal that i do know. I have a top engine steady on it at the moment and will take that off and then I can see if its coming from the cylinder head rivet or top of engine backplate that will have to wait till fri due to work pressures

Right i have took the engine steady off and had a look for the rivet and there dosn't seem to be one (MG METRO HEAD) so that rules that out, also took each bolt on the timing cover out and placed 2 extra washers behind the heads it has cured the leak behind the engine plate, so result there thanks to ASPHALT but i still have oil entering the fan and cant seem to locate it do you think that the timing plate has a crack around the oil breather and is being forced out under pressure as it didnt leak a drop when I ran it in the garage only after taking it to work (10 miles) im at a loss as to a fix now because the fan slings it about its hard to see where it comes from. I did clear the breather on the timing case with petrol when I took it off anyone any more ideas where it could be being blown out and how much pressure is actually in the timing case? I also have put a peice of paper between the half moon seal and the plate and it seems to be dry. Thanks in advance. J.D.
