High Idle / Sticking Throttle

Final one for now!
'99 Cooper Standard MPI
Idles at 1500 RPM... That's the first thing- how do I wind this back down to where it needs to be... (900??)
Secondly, My throttle seems to stick around 2000 for a few seconds at a time when I rev, and when in forward motion.
If I leave it, it then returns to around 1500 as per above.
Fault diagnosis / checklist on where to start with these would be really helpful!
Thank you!!
Kelly

Could be your throttle position sensor or even your idle air control valve
Thanks Pauly- I'll try both of those and report back with results... failing that, diagnostics will be the way forward I think...

The sticking seems only to occur when the engine's warm- up to around midway on the gauge.
When cold, revs are around 1200 RPM (not the "standard" 1500 when warm!)
Due to the bad weather I've postponed any further inspection til it's better out there, but thought I'd just update the above in case it rings a bell with anyone.
Thanks!

i thought the 'standard' idle was around 950rpm?
Sorry Carl- my bad explanation... I meant that because it's idling at 1500rpm "as standard" at the moment due to this issue, that's what it keeps going back to! I'd love it to be purring around the 950/1000rpm mark!!
I've got a great list of things to try now thanks to everyone here, so I'll tinker and tamper and update with results!!
Thanks,
Kelly

I had the mini plugged into a diagnostic code reader today, at Track, Road and Race in Northampton.
It threw up 2 main issues- lambda and air temp sensors. I believe once one goes, the other's likely to follow as they try to compensate.
So I'm going to attempt to replace these, and I'll let you know if this sorts things out!!!

I know its extra cash to have a test done but its better in the long run because you know exactly what to do now.
