Model:Mini Van
Year: 1968
Description of problem:

I want to fit orginal 4.5" Cooper S rims (non reverse) on my van which has drumbrakes, but I read on
http://www.dsnclassi...reverserim.html
that they wouldn't fit without a spacer on drums. But when trying to fit one in the front it all went just fine and as I can see they dont hit the rim anywhere.

Are there any other "hidden" things i should watch out for? What is the problem why they shouldn't fit?

From memory it's the rears which don't go on unless you have the drums with the built-in spacer. On the front with wide tyres the inside of the tyre may hit the damper, but the main issue will be that you have then narrowed the track measurement on the front by around 2". Now, since standard Cooper 'S' rims are expensive why not sort-of swap them for reverse rims which are fine with drum brakes, front & rear.

Yup I can confirm that the above is correct- the fronts will actually go on ok but will be too in-board. The rears will hit the radius arm/ damper without 'S' drums.

Perfect opportunity/ excuse to upgrade to 7.5" 'S' brake setup

or just put spacered drums on the front so that the track is maintained...

they may fit but you're going to upset the steering a little and you may catch on the tie bars.

So using these special drums ( http://www.minispare...ty=pb&pid=35841 ) all around would make all ok then? and some longer studs i guess

It's partly because the rarity I want to put them on since they are just lying around anyway, but getting rid of them is not an option, im taking these rims to the grave!

Will have to think about this.

photoshop with the rims on, why cant it be this easy in real life..

Yip, you need these studs:

And don't forget the longer screws to hold the drums on:

I have the same setup on mine (four spacered drums) and it works great.

I have a set of these from when I had my last mini. Originally I had spacers front and back, and longer wheel studs. I dont think I had screws for the brake drums, and it had no effect. I ended up with Cooper S rear drums (and screws) and Cooper S front discs. They are definately good for that original look, and you dont need arch flares. They will rub on shocks and sometimes the inner arch on the rear without spacers.
