how easy is converting a single point injection setup to a carb, are all mpi injection engines setup by an ecu? can you just get rid of it all and bolt a carb on it?

any advice appreciated guys :cheese:

Injection is technically better, as it offers smoother running, supposed better consumption etc yadda yadda yadda.....................BUT, in reality, when it goes wrong, it really goes wrong, and still there are garages that have no idea what they are doing.

Modifications become hard aswell as the ECU has a set limit on parameters and you have to fit a piggy back ecu (or a new one completely to alter things much)

Saying that, if you have the money I would much rather have a well setup injection mini running a true 90bhp than a well setup carb mini running a true 90bhp, because the injection mini will still be running right a long time in the future.

Once you have used a fully mapable ECU, you will never use a carb again.

Going from injection to carb is usualy due to two reasons.

1) its not working properly and few people/ garages know whats wrong/ can fix it, resulting in frustration with the thought that injection is the Voodoo magic that can't be fixed and the only way to fix it is to get rid

2) (and should be the only reason in reality) The engine has been tuned beyond the current capabilities of the original system.

My feelings on 2) is that I would be surprised if an after market fully mapable injection system would cost much more than fitting the twin 1 1/2 SU's and having them set up properly. Id rather have full control over fueling and ignition at the click of the mouse :cheese:

As for 1) well you need to get the right person to look at it first off if there's any problem. You may even find Rover dealers (if there are any left) have difficulties fixing it. Its the way of the world, but it does not change the fact that fuel injection is far superior in every way.

Standard injection system as fitted by rover is good upto around 90bhp. Fit the bits and it tunes itself. Further improvements can be made with these piggy back ECU controllers.

Just make sure you' ve changed the Lambda sensor for a new Bosch item and replaced the vacuum capilary elbows with the new rubber ones :cheese: thats %75 of the issues

The conversion is easy, but you will need the loom from a carb model mini etc.

Clickyto read a topic I did on it.

i was told and i belive him. is that when a carb gets to 45mm and beond it can no longer flow the gas and fuel mixture well. which make me agree that ingetion is better even though i use carbs

But you would need some sort of monster engine to require a carb of 45mm or beyond!

hi guys

just reading the discussion looks very intresting. i am new to the mini scene and i have recently bought a 1996 sprite 1.3 spi.

whats a piggy back ecu controler? any ideas where i can get a remapable ecu? or is it going to be way out of my depth? what would you recomend for boosting the performance on it?

mini sprocket said " just make sure you've changed the lambda sensor for a new bosch item and replaced the vacum capilary elbows with the new rubber ones" what are these? where can i get them? and where are they located on the car?

mini sprocket also said that the ecu will tune itself does this mean that it will cope with all modds done to the engine up to 90bhp?

so many questions bout would be very greatful if anyone can help me out!

thanks in advance.
