what do the numbers mean on a gearbox, i have A/BZ4 BC&M DAM 2886 on mine

They are the case casting numbers, and describe the type of casing, but bears very little relavence to the contents.

My search for same DAM2886 box came up with a box built at time of change between A series and A+ and has best of both worlds

Mmmm,,,, I wouldn't quite go that far.
They do have the bigger Layshaft and some even have the bigger nose Mainshaft, but that's where it ends. They have a thin and quite weak Centre Web and small Idler Gear Bearings.
