Hi I replaced the head on my sons 1983 998 mini with an unleaded version ( refurbed by mini speed ) around six months ago and now the head gasket has blown between cylinders 1 & 2 any ideas why, any thing I should check before refitting. I have stripped it down following a compression test finding no compression between 1&2 and there is no obvious reason to what could have caused this.

When you put the cylinder head on the car first time around , was the headgasket tourqed twice . Once when the head is fitted and then again when the engine is warm?

Don't you drive it after fitting for 50 or so miles, let it cool, and then retorque it? i.e not when it's warm?

from what ive read, it either blew for no apparent reason, or it may have been that your son keeps in the higher rpm range a touch to often, which may have reduced the life of the gasket

Was the head skimmed at all? Also what type of headgasket was used?

Has it been overheated or run with low water level?
