Hi

I have had an Mpi before but never had any problems with the front lights. I have bought another 2 days ago and I'm having a couple of problems.

First off on my original, the two outer spotlights would come on when you pressed the small green switch on the centre control panel and the two inner ones would come on when you had your big beams on. I'd just like to check that this is the correct way as they are wired up oppositely on this new one.

Anyway, I have wired them up as my original for now. The two middle spotlights come on fine when you put the main beams on but when you use the switch inside I cannot get the outer spots on. I have swapped the wiring round to test if the lights actually work (which they do) but the inner ones wont come on through the dashboard switch....so it doesn't seem to be the lights themselves. The green light on the dash always lights up when switched down.

Also, on the wiring that connects to the outer lights, there is a wire that has been cut off at the end. Its covered in a rubber sheath. I presume this to be an earth. I've stripped the end and fixed it down under a screw on the body temporarily but it makes no difference. The only other point is that when I have wired the outer spots up to the main beem to get them working, the left hand side seems to work fine but the right one is alot dimmer. Its the same for the main headlights, with the left hand side bright and the right dimmer. I've not looked whether they are like this with just the headlights on.

I hope this makes sense and would appreciate any help!!!

Thanks alot
Andy.

Hi Andy,

The Circuit Diagrams are in the link below. Page 32 has the UK version and 33 the Japanese version. I have a Japanese SPI and it appears to work as stated in the diagram. The outer lights come on with the green switch (mine is by the air vent). The inner ones come on with the main beams. However, if the outer lights are on, the center ones will not come on with the main beams. It seems that in UK version the center lights will always come on with the mains on, regardless of if the outer ones are on or not.

I hope that helps,
Ivan

Hi

yes, this is correct. The inner pair are "driving lights" / spot lights, and come on with full beam (blue light on the dash). The outers are front fogs - these only work with dipped beam, and the green switch on the dash rail.

Also, on the wiring that connects to the outer lights, there is a wire that has been cut off at the end. Its covered in a rubber sheath. I presume this to be an earth. I've stripped the end and fixed it down under a screw on the body temporarily but it makes no difference.

What colour wire was the one that had been cut off at the end?

One point to note; the outer fog lights are on an individual line fuse (I THINK it is 15amp). The fuse is located in the very top left hand side of the engine bay, near where the bonnet prop hinges - above a line of 3x yellow relays. Open the cover and check the fuse - could be a simple fix.

The only other point is that when I have wired the outer spots up to the main beem to get them working, the left hand side seems to work fine but the right one is alot dimmer

Possibly a break in the wire going to the right hand light. Get all the lights working normally, then work on this problem seperately.

HTH
Ryan

To confirm, it is a 15amp fuse, its number C827 in the attached picture:

Oh, does this mean someone has frigged around with mine as I can switch the fogs on and then select high beam and the fogs stay on ??

Hi

Thanks for your replys everyone!

I checked the fuse and it was blown as there was a break in the centre of the wire. I have changed it but they are still not working.

The cut wire is brown.

Any more ideas?

Thanks again
Andy.

browm = permanent live (12V)...

Sorry for the confusion Nick, yes you are correct -the fogs can stay on with full beam as well as dipped. Your car has standard wiring setup

Would it reach to the main starter motor pole? - should be a few other brown wires coming off it. I rekon it should have a ring terminal on it - perhaps has broken off.

(earthing this wire wont have hurt anything by the way).

It probably would yes although its hard to tell how much is missing from the end. I had a look at the starter motor last night quickly. There's three sections on it with letters on each section. The first bit has a thick brown wire going into it and the middle bit has a thin brown wire with going into it. These seem to go into other areas of the car and have not been cut. I'm at work at the minute and I'm not in the car so I can't do any further checking or remember the letters etc......
