Model: Rover Mini City, 998cc & Stage 1 Kit

Year: 1991 J reg

Description of problem:

My friend has a Mini (ZED) in which she has problems changing into 2nd Gear.
It can happen when speeding up and when slowing down.

Its not something that happens regularly but it is happening occasionaly, which it shouldnt.

The only thing that seems to help when it happens is pumping the clutch.

General consensus is that it it probably going to be a problem with the gear box
(if this is the case then he may have to be sold due to lack of funds)

Does anyone have any ideas what it might be (if not the gear box)
And whether there is also a way we can fix it with minimal cost to keep the Mini.

Many Thanks for reading All :(

I would also suspect the 2nd gear baulk ring, as with pumping the clutch pedal you are effectively double declutching.

Worth trying bleeding the clutch hydraulics - but it probably IS the first signs of the gearbox showing it's age. However it will go for many many miles yet provided it is treated carefully. Don't let it 'crunch' - either learn to double de clutch properly, or don't change down from third to second on the move, just scuttle round corners in third gear - and certainly don't change down when stopping!!

Does sound like Baulk Rings, had similar problem from 3rd to 4th, but don't get rid of the car, find a sympathetic mini owner or mechanic,Cardiff mini club maybe? Try this http://www.minispares.com/Search.aspx Mini's aren't perfect, but they are cool and worth the aggro. Baulk Rings cost peanuts.

i think i have the same problem, is it almost like it wont let u slide it into the gear, u have to put it in very very slowly to make sure that it doesnt crunch ?

Slight clutch drag is a possibility but ought to be replicable in other gears. Baulk ring wear is most likely. A test is to try and select the suspect gear, while stationary with the engine running, but without using the clutch. A healthy baulk ring should resist your efforts but a worn one may crunch and try to engage.

thanks for replying guys, its my mini. Yes and no to the grating noice, somtimes it does but not always. It seems work okay untill you haven't chaged gear in a while, then it feels as if it has just siezed, and the only way that i can get it to go into gear is to pump the clutch. It is maily the lower gears and when you chage down. It is going to the garrage tommrow for them to have a look at it.

Sounds like clutch to me....

If the clutch is working properly then pumping it will make little difference, however what pumping does do is force more fluid through the clutch system.. therefore increasing clutch movement...

Baulkrings may be cheap, but changing them is not a simple job, you will need to take the engine out and strip the gearbox to change them.

Hey everone thanks for answering, had it back from the garrage today, they said it was a build up of hydrolic fluid which they have drained. Touch wood it's driving as smooth as a button now! So glad! ;)

That's good news, I hope Zed behaves himself now.

I had gear selection problems a decade or so back and that was to do with the primary gear (if I remember correctly).
