right just finished putting my car back together with a fibreglass front and i went out for a test drive
she will only rev to around 2K under load and if i try to go past that it goes up and down eraticly and jerks backwards and forwards
twice while i was on the way back, when the revs dropped off a bit she just cut out
reason im thinking its the vacuum advance is that i have removed the charcoal filter completely and the pipes were left 'cut off' for testing
so where do the pipes from the charcoal filter need to go/be blanked off??
i think the vacuum from the dizzy need to go straight to the carb then the rest blanking off but not sure
i also then have one coming from the (flame trap??) on the clutch housing which 'T's off to the carb
then i have the return to the fuel tank, do i just blank this off?

Does This Sound Like A Vacuum Advance Problem?

Nothing to do with the dizzy... what you need to do is close off the breather circuit which use to have the canister as a collection point... the pipes all need to be joined together or blanked off... the Vac advance for the dizzy was not originally part of this, as it is an independent pipe from the dizzy to the carb...

The vac advance was hooked up to the emission control system. The thermal valve (screwed in to the 'stat housing) stops any vac advance until the engine gets warm. I think it was chiefly to protect the cat converter. The purge valve on the charcoal canister is operated by the thermal valve too. If any bit is missing there'll be no vacuum to make any of it work.
It shouldn't really have much effect when the throttle is open enough, but I guess it could have been incorrectly set up to compensate.

right then, i thought i got it all sorted and connected up properly but the car failed to start at all last night and still wont start now
started looking elsehwere and ive got spark etc, ive got fuel pumping but it isnt getting to the plugs. what im thinking now is that something is stopping me pumping fuel through the carb, the carb all seems to be fine, (no blockages) and if i poor fuel into the back it does get to the plugs
any ideas?

haha you shouldve actually put money on that. the breather pipe from the clutch housing breather to the carb needs to still be connected
at the moment it had a t piece there which went somewhere else (charcoal filter i think) so that bit is pushed onto the T-bar on my rocker cover until i sort a new pipe for it
also need to get a vacuum pip that will go from dizzy to carb in one stretch
is there someone on here that did these?
