From October 1984 all Mini models got 8.4" disk brakes up front (& 12" wheels as standard).

They then also got a tandem type servo fitted from October 1988.

So it's very odd if yours has drum brakes. Any chance of seeing some pictures?

Thanks, I waited years to get one until I got one off e-Bay.

:)

But it does mark the point where all Mini models switched to 12" wheels and disc brakes up front. i.e. 1984.

Best way to check it to get it up on stands and check for yourself.

Yes it should have discs..... however you show me a standard Mini..... this is possibly just a modification in some way either legal or illegally modified... I am thinking that it was a 1988 model that had some damage and an older Mini came along to "fill" the space, swap over the number plates etc......

Or that the discs were so badly worn that changing to drums was an option that meant the brakes worked ..... ???

Or as you guys say it is simply a mistake.... and they need fixing

I'm selling a complete 8.4" brake setup for £80.

But yeh it should already have them fitted as already stated.

In that case, check the calliper pistons for corrosion and / or resistance to movement by hand, if they are corroded they must be changed, if they are stiff then it may just be dirt and a strip, clean and rebuild may well sort it out.

You may also need new discs and pads, but as long as they are flat and smooth then give them a try

Your Mini should have very good brakes and it really should be light years better than drums all round.

Shouldn't cost much to fix though.
