i have heard of people being pulled over for this but never fined, know of a couple of people with racing numbers on the doors and never had any trouble. if worst comes to worst you'll get a few words said to you and you'll have to peel the vinyl numbers off

It's not illegal in terms of road law as far as I know but many believe it is, this is mainly due to it being illegal in terms of the RAC Blue Book. The Blue Book bars racers from displaying their numbers when travelling between stages in multi stage road or track events, to discourage competitors from racing on the public road and prevent them using the event as an excuse if they get nicked. That's why the numbers are crossed through.

Displaying numbers will usually invalidate your insurance though because its one of those things that insurance companies hate. Many won't quote on a car displaying numbers. Check with your insurer before putting numbers on your car.

It is not illegal under Road Traffic rules, but as pointed out, it is inder RACMSA rules. Unless the car is actually competing on an event, ie between stages, it is against the rules to display competion numbers on the car on the road. The tape across the numbers counts as obscuring to numbers for RACMSA rules. Some classes require the car to be driven to events, as in road car classes for some hill climb or sprints and they may carry the numbers for the event as they often run the same numbers in a championship.

The mere fact that someone is driving about on the road with unobscured numbers makes it patently obvious that they do not hold a competition licience or compete with the car.

An alternative is to get some of the white circles which are often used as a background for the numbers and leave the numbers themselves off. Then there can be no arguments from any quarters.

Just watch the paintwork though - it is amazing how quickly the paintwork fades and leaves you with an unfaded part under the stickers!

Try asking on the VW Beatle Forum.

How many of their cars run round with "Herby" type decals
