Right this might take a while but here goes, I bought a gearbox on here off someone a while ago but cant remember who it was but was led to believe it was in good condition, so i decided to take my engine out and change and uprate loads of bits while i changed the gearbox over because my original one was crunching in second and becoming hard to get it into first.

So last weekend i had everything back in and was ready to go, i went to take it for a spin and first gear was fine, second gear was fine, third went in but popped out every i accelerated and fourth gear was nowhere to be seen. So im guessing the guy who sold it to me saw me coming, becayuse when i removed the gearbox there was a shaft and a couple of gears laying at the bottom of the sump so i reckon there was some missing parts somewhere. So i had to take the engine out again this weekend after sourcing a recently reconditioned gearbox off another member on TMF.

So i done it all again this weekend and finished last night and to my amazement it hasnt worked, it goes into all the gears nicely but when i start to pull away and drive it starts to make some god awful loud crunching/grinding/scratching (basically a horrible loud noise that i cant really describe but i no it aint good). So i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the matter? any help will much appreciated and certainly repayed if someone experienced with gearboxes could come round and help me out because im getting fed up with not being able to drive my car :dontgetit: and i wouldnt mind using my ticket for london to brighton.

Thanks
Sam

Small update, ive just been out there with my dad and started the car up and there seems to a rattling noise around the clutch area, but it disappears when the clutch pedal is pushed down. All the gears engage fine but then when i start to pull off the horrible noise comes back and it doesnt seem to be the most quite sound. could it possibly be that my clutch and flwheel has come loose?? or isnt on properly?

Hard to say what he problem could be with out hearing it but if the nosie disappears when you press the clutch it could be the flywheel is loose or the clutch is loose or maybe the release bearing.
Good luck in finding the problem

I don't think it is this, but did you put the thrust washers in for the idler gear?

Could be the transfer gears - did you check the bearings and set the clearance on the idler?

It's many years (at least 20!!) since I've done this myself but I seem to remember the transfer gear train can make a lot of noise if it's not ship shape. And when you press the clutch the noise will stop because the gears stop going round.

The noise disappearing when the clutch is pressed is indicative of transfer gear issues, but could also relate to a bearing/shaft failure in the gearbox ( either 1st motion single roller or laygear )

Bottom line, engine's coming out again...

If you want the car working for the L2B and don't mind paying, PM me.
