thinking of treating my boyfriend to a new tool box, he's 6 months into an apprenticeship and would like to stat building up a decent tool collection, but its easier said than done on £400 a month! so i thought i'd help him out.

I cant afford snap-on or anything like that and we have a halfords trade card which knocks an extra few quid off, and halfords pro tools come with a lifetime guarentee anyway so i was wondering if anybody has had any experience or advice?

Ill probly start with this...

And fill it with things like this....
http://www.halfords....tegoryId_165469 (no bloody imperial sizes for the mini!)

all my halfords pro stuff is top quality, cant fault any of it. i have a full sockets and spanner set a topbox, screwdriver other bits and bobs and it all feels exelent. i have only ever broke 1 tool in 2 years of mini fiddling, and they swapped it without even showing the receipt. exellent :dontgetit:

I have alot of Snap-On tools but cannot justifie paying the money for them anymore with me not being on the bench anymore. I also have lots of Halfords tools and they really are top quality and if I remember rightly they offer a lifetime guarantee aswell so definatly worth investing.

ive got that box to go on top of my big box. i think youd be better buying the ratchet spanners in my opinion, they make life so much easierwith my trade card i paid 70 for it, last year.

to be honest snap-on stuff isnt anything special, just overpriced. i think most people just buy it so they can brag, all my ratchets are snap-on but everything else is halfords pro/advanced, draper expert or sealey proffessional. so all my tools have a lifetime guarentee. ive broken a few halfords tools, they exchanged them, no worries whatsoever.

personally, i bought the sockets that were on the rails, instead of som plastic thing, which is baulky and takes up alot of space.

Hes lucky to have someone like you :dontgetit:

In regards to the tools, I agree Halfords tools are equally as good (esp as they have life time gurantee).

With the Spanner set you get some brake pipe spanners too (my mate bought one).

A set of screw drivers the last time I went in were something like £10, Snap on you'll be looking to pay at least that for one! That being said, I still swear by Snap on (have been brought up around them).

yea id rather have the ratchet spanner but they dont do them in the tray, the reason i want the trays for him is because he looses everything!! (another reason not to buy expensive stuff) i figure if he has a moulded in spot for everything at least he will have a definite place to put everything, maby making him less likly to loose it! if they did something like that for ratchets id definitly have them

Its the least i can do for all the work he does on the mini for me! obviously i'd love to get him snap on, all the little 16 year old apprentices on his course with no rent to pay and no bills are goin mental around the snap on van, paying it of monthly out of their wages, but £400 dont go far when a snap on ratchet can be more than a months rent!

EDIT: i just read that back and just had to get my violin out! sorry for the depressing rant, i'm not that poor really, i'm grateful for what ive got!

Im sitting here thinking the pro sets are pretty damn expensive, had a look on ebay and some other places and with the lifetime guarantee it might be worth going with the halfords.

Thought your boyfriend lived with his parents, so rent cant be that bad.

Every little helps... Tell him to get the leaflets from the Snap On Van when it next comes round, they sometimes have quite good deals on Blue Point (the cheaper end of Snap On) stuff and if hes bought them from them they usually don't give you any crap when you break anything.

They were knocking out service kits (1/4 & 3/8) a while back at £100! I missed out :P

Try ebay for second hand roll cabs and boxes. The stuff on there is so much cheaper.Like a ex display unit of the halfords professional roll cab and top box(the black ones) sold for £200 and there basicly new,the roll cab is that price on its own.Plus snap on boxes don't tend to hold there value to well but there tools do.Mean I sold a set of snap on ratchets for under a £100(1/4,3/8 and 1/2).Just because there new prices are high some of the stuff that's a few years old is very cheap even though its still perfectly good.

Anything from the Halfords Pro range is recommended  I'm using the top box similar to your one with another chest underneath it
