hi i have a 1991 mini cooper 1.3i. now on the panel according to the user manual with the car, i think that the choke is ment to be on the right and the heater temp on the left. but the heater temp is on the right, and there is a switch on the left which turns on a fan on the other side of the radiator for some reason.

ok so is this standard or what?

is it ment to have a choke or is it supose to be a automatic choke, if so it is not working!

and what is this extra fan for?

any ideas are welcome, thanks

Injections don't have a choke, mixture is controlled by the ecu.

The extra switch is probably a DIY add on, can't say I've heard of that as standard.

I maybe wrong but its possible yours should have the radiator with the sensor for an electric fan. maybe the rads been changed for a cheaper version and the switched added .

Im no injection expert, but I am fairly certain that as its an injection engine it would have an automatic choke?
Im also fairly certain that the injection cars had a auxilery fan which would be switched by the temp sender, maybe the temp sender is buggered so someone wired in a switch as well?

Yes and yes........ SPI & MPI being injection do NOT have a choke, it is controlled exclusively by the ECU, The auxilliary fan never had an in car switch as standard, it was controlled by the fan switch in the bottom of the rad just by the lower edge of the grille.

ok thanks i thought that the switch was a bit dodgy, the previous owner did a lot of bodged jobs on it.

ok i thought that it was an automatic choke, but the problem is that it dont seem to be working at all. i start the engine from cold and it revs low, and keeps reving low untill it has warmed up.

any ideas on how to fix this?

It is not an automatic choke, it simply doesn't have or need a choke at all. The temperature sender for the engine could be the cause of the poor cold starting. The sender for the cooling fan is separate from the engine one though.

Moved to injection section.

The throttle linkage and acceleratror cable settings are critical on an SPI.

And it has an actuator to raise the engine revs, these can stick / fail and give you the same or similar effects to those you are experiencing :)

Turn off the ignition, get someone else to turn it back on and with the air filter removed watch the linkage very closely....... it should move a little bit :P
