My head is telling me that (im assuming the subs are sharing the same air space) having them facing different directions could be bad.

The pressure of them all driving in the same direction would be fine as they are all doing exactly the same thing, but turning one around would mean its driving against the other two.

I'v got a feeling it could cancel bass due to constructive and destructive sound waves. It might also harm the subs too.

This is all just speculation from me though. I'm sure someobody will come in with the real nitty gritty behind why its kosher or not

you can have 2 subs facing down & a sub facing up with no problems. all you need to do is reverse the wiring to the upside down subs to the upright ones, this will keep them in phase. Mixing in & out like this is quite common in multi-sub arrays. Some professional PA companies make their sub-boxes like this, they believe it reduces distortion.
Another reason to point the subs down is that it increases the volume of the box, some people do it if their sub looks better from behind!

Your speakers have a phase. So, remeber each speaker you have is basically an electromagnet, when possitive is applied it moves to say fully extended. So, if you have speakers facing the opposite ways, and wired in the same way, so possitive to positive on every speaker, due to them facing opposite directions, when possitive is applied to every speaker, two are going to move in one direction and one in the opposite, because its facing the opposite way to the others. To combat this you need to reverse the poitive and negative on the speaker thats facing the other way round, so your possitive from the amp will go to the negative marked terminal on the driver.
