there are two types of threads in suspension cones, you may have the wrong thread in the tool

yea theres ones with imperial or metric threads. all cars 79 (i think) onwards are fitted with metric threads and i used a metric threaded compresion tool.

yea there is two threads not sure of the cut of date for the imperial but i hav a 1984 and that had imperial 1/2 UNF thread the metric is 14 MM thread.if you hav just striped the thread on the tool you may get away with re tapping the thread inthe dohnut to clean it up and then try againe.but if the thread in the dohnut is striped then you will most likly need to re drill and tap the tread in the dohnut to a biger size.

Yep they do that a lot.
Use a correctly sized nut (same as the thread on the compression tool) on the underside of the rubber donut when you assemble it. When you wind out the compression tool the nut will drop into the ally cone and live there happily ever after :mrcool:)

It could be a right pain, but with a bit of luck you'll be able to unwind the hi-lo enough to uncompress the spring and remove it by taking the top arm out,
