in my mini at the moment i have a jvc headunit and some pioneer speakers on the rear parcel shelf, one doesnt work so i thinking about getting some new speakers and a headunit. my question is can i simply replace the old HU with a new one and the same with speakers and use the existing wiring. IM new to this all by the way.

You could do no problem, depending on the quality of the instsall. My install is running high quality components, so by running standard wiring i would just be wasting all the money going into it, a system is only as good as its weakest link. However if your just going to be going with your standard £50 speakers and a simple Hu, your standard wiring will be fine.

Not a clue without seeing it mate. Few basics to check;
Using a multimeter you should see a small voltage at the speaker terminals, if not, trace back from there, if you get all the way back to the head unit then its the amplifier gone.
Try swappping the two speakers round, see if this works, if the sound swaps to the other side, usupect speaker, if it stays on the same side, then its wiring/amplifier/headunit.
