I'm looking at a Mini for my first car and a friend will be driving down with me. I'd like to know if it's possible to get insurance on the day I buy the car so I can drive it home. It's my first time delving into anything like this so go easy on me.

Yes its fine.

Have done it myself before. They just start it on the hour or what ever. so just go get a cup of tea or something untill the insurance kicks in!

It should be if it is a work day. Depending on whether you'd be happy to drive it home with just 3rd party insurance, you could possibly arrange it so someone with their own policy can drive it back, most policies provide minimum legal cover if you're driving a car you don't own.

Don't convince yourself you're buying it beforehand, still be prepared to walk away if you're not happy.

Thought it was worth adding...

It's also a good idea not to actually buy the car until you have insured it, leave a deposit in exchange for a receipt setting out the details of the sale. A double winner as you won't have to carry loads of cash in to an unknown situation and it gives another reason to get the deal set out in writing. Try and slip in words like roadworthy or "as described" and print it on the back of a copy of the advert.

I don't know if there'll be anyone other than my mate that's driving me there to come down with us. Possibly but not 100% sure.

I should be going to see the car on Friday so at least it's a work day.

When I bought my mini, I got the inscurance within the hour, I think I went with Tesco the first year, but as above again, don't buy it before you see the car, and prepare yourself to be disappointed with the car, I went to see at least 15 mini's before I found the right one...

also if you convince yourself thats the one you tend to pay more than you really want becuase you have decided what you want is there in front of you and all those 'plans' can happen like above be prepared to walk away even if it rips your heart out mistakes like that cost big££££

Even though I'm set on the car I'm trying my best not to get my hopes up on getting it. I'll keep looking for any other decent motors in the meantime.

Very well put, I done exactly that, I had to tear myself away from a couple, but in the end it's worth it. and If you don't do that and really look around, a better one will creep up as soon as you buy it.

Another good reason not to turn up with the cash burning a hole in your pocket.

Take note, this is really good advice.

It is really good advice. I've just seen the edit that was put into that post.

Unfortunately I won't be getting the Mini I had my eye on as someone has offered him more money but there's some good advice in here. Thanks a bunch.
