It could just be the sulfur in the air, from the volcanic ash.

Might be worth checking a few of those items.

Somebody has already mentioned the washer bottle, check to see the cap is on tight. I have suffered this very same problem on my Passat. The water mixture had gone bad so with the lid not sealed correctly the noxious smell was drawn into the car through the pollen filter.

I drained all of the old water out flushed it and made sure the lid sealed correctly and the smell was gone.

If you are getting an odour from the battery then it will be worth checking the charging rate as you may have a problem with the alternator. It could be over charging causing the battery to over heat.

Nothing to do with the cat these days as all fuel is ULSD. It was the sulphur in the fuel that used to make the bad egg smell when it got into the catalyst.

A friend had this, but his car was running dynamo not alternator. The dynamo was over charging the battery, it literally stunk out the whole street. Couldn't go within 10 metres of it without nearly throwing up. Could it be a fault with the alternator charging incorrectly?
If not, I'd change the battery anyways. Does sound very battery orientated, especially coming from the boot.
Dan :)

I had the exact same problem a couple of months ago, it was the battery overcharging as you've discovered. I pulled the plastic cover off the alternator and you can see the regulator with two wires coming off it. An autoelectrical supplier should be able to get one. Cost me $16 so 6 quid to you
