Hey everyone,

Not really sure what to search for, my terms didnt come up with anything, so thought it best to just ask. I have a standard tape/radio headunit in my '97 cooper, and I'd like to replace it with a new head unit, probably a Sony one. Can anyone inform me of what I need to do the conversion, particularly removing the rover head unit? Key things for removal, wiring harness?

Thanks,

James. :)

Is the current H/U mounted under the passenger side dash? Are you going to put the new H/U in there or dash mount it?

You will need to have the radio removal keys, the 'U' shaped wire looking things. On top of the old radio there should be a diagram of what the wiring is so you should be able to work out if they match up to the new ISO plugs. Make sure all the speaker connections are in the right place too.
Finally you might need to remove the old radio's cage and insert the new radio's one if your putting it in the same place. If your dash mounting it then the new radio cage will have to mount in there before installing the radio.

Good luck.

The current one is in the dashboard, rover radio, rover dash. Are the key things something I specifically need or can I poke something else in there?

Thanks for your reply :mrcool:

A picture of the radio would be a great help, there's a few different designs of radio removal keys.

If it's the usual 2 holes either side of the radio, then I've found in the past chopping up a wire coat hanger usually does the trick.

That looks like it needs the U shaped keys like THESE. The legs fit in the small holes, two either side. Push them all the way in then hold them and the radio and pull it all out. You will be able to see the connector at the back once you get it out then you can get the right adapter if needed.

Yes those are the ones, but expensive for what they are. If you only need them to remove the old radio then try the coat hanger trick as the after market keys are more like THESE and if your not going to use them again then save your ££.

Ah too late, I picked up a set in halfords yesterday. Im sure at some point someone will want to borrow them, and its still cheaper than paying someone to fit it :)
