Brake Pipe Flaring Confusion

Hi
I am about to install the brake lines to my Mk1 mini. The photo shows the old steel brake pipe, with just a domed end which seats inside the union to make the seal.

However, the other pipe is from Automec, obtained from Minispares, and it has a double flare.

I am affraid that if I use the new pipe with a double flare, it wont seal correctly because of the shape at the bottom of the union, also in the photo.

What can I or should I do?

Is this pipe to be used with the brass t-piece in the picture to split the rear lines at the front of the rear subframe?

If so then the double flare will indeed not seal inside the brass t-piece, which requires a single flare.

The other end of the copper pipe you are holding should have a single flare on the other end that is to be used in the t-piece. The end facing the camera, with the double flare, fits onto the flexi pipe that is fixed to the rear subframe.

Also copper pipe must be supported over long lengths as it work hardens due to vibration quicker than the stock steel/nickle brake pipe.

It looks like it will seat. There were 2 types of flare that would mate together to make a joint; one like your old pipe and a cone shaped flare on female unions. They were different for Metric and Imperial fittings, so you do find universal flares that are more domed to suit both seats. You could loosely assemble it and turn the fixings a few times, which should show up where they are contacting and if they are likely to create a seal.

Down to the local garage, get the end cut off and reflared. Your only going to loose about 5mm so your pipe will still fit.

Buy a flaring tool - it's well worth it. You need the simple '1st Op' flare - not the 2nd OP. Best to use KUNIFER for brake pipes - it doesn't rust or work harden. I have had a copper brake pipe come off in my hand - it was on the car when I got it - had work hardened right in at the flare - and snapped off when I touched it!!

You also have to remember that the OP1 tool has to be used first, even if wanting an OP2 shaped end. That unless you want a really poor OP2 end.
