You can't remove the front subframe without the engine coming out too I'm afraid - the subframe is what holds the engine in the car!
Why do you need to remove it out of interest?

i think he/she means is it easier to remove the subframe with the engine attached to it, or with the engine removed from it..

Disconnect the following:
Brake hydraulic lines
Clutch Hydraulic line, or just unbolt the slave cylinder, and support it somewhere to no strain the flexi line.
Wiring - Earth Strap from engine, ignition wiring and charging circuits.
remove the gear linkage, (roll pin punch) and unbolt the steady bar above it.
remove engine steadies
Remove exhaust manifold, and inlet (or at least eh Carb)
Speedo Cable needs to be disconnected
i would also remove bits like the dizzy cap. and anything else you think might get in the way.
Then you are free to remove the bolts holding the subframe to the body work (2x turret bolts on the bulkhead, 4x bolts on rear of subframe,( there are 2 on each side located above the footwell) and the 2x bolts at the front of the subframe (the teardrop mounts)
I think that is everything, if i've missed something obvious im sure someone will tell me.

thanks for the info. im about to start restoring the mini and the subframe will need to be removed at some point to get it sandblasted, several people have set drop the subframe with the engine attached then removing engine would be easier either way they are both being removed from the car !
