Is zinc primer good for use on bare metal or is red oxide better?

zinc primer is for welded seams that cant be reached after welding , generaly not suitable for overpainting (but some are , best to check with the paint manufacturer)

So if i was spraying onto bare metal (and some primer) should i use self etch primer?

self-etch is not nessesary on steel ,only on aluminium .
