Noticed today that my Mini is covered in what I can only describe as 'cracks' in the paint. They definatley wasnt there a couple of weeks ago and seemed to be dotted about randomly all over the car. I cant for the life of me work out where they have come from. The car was painted over a year ago so I would have thought that any reactions would have appeared a long time ago. Anyone got any ideas what they could be?

Are they large cracks that look like splits, or lots of hair line cracks in close proximity to each other?

To be honest it looks like someone has just very lightly cut through the paint with a stanley blade.

Its no help, but I've got similar markings on the roof of Poo.

I think it may be down to the primer and the top coat being incompatible?

Funny thing is it was painted last April. These have only appeared within the last week or so

I'm not a paint expert but I believe its because the primer is Cellose and the top coat is 2 pack. Cellouse paint remains slightly soft whilst the 2 pack goes hard?

(or maybe the other way round?)

Anyway, because one layer can move a little and the other can't this give cracks.

What you have there is splitting. This can be caused by many factors. It's mostly seen with acrylic based paints. However it can also be casued by: Too much build on primer coats/top coats with insufficeint drying times inbetween, incorrect hardener used for weather conditions, the list can be endless.....I would reccomend that you take it back to the garage that done the repair as the only cure is to strip it back because if you paint over it, it will only re appear. Although they could be the innocent party and this fault could have occured by painting over previous inferior paint surfaces.

Its celly paint over celly primer. I painted it myself last year and it has been perfect until now. That picture is on the wing, all that is on there is there black primer that the panel came in, celly primer and the celly topcoat. There is no older paint under it. I have noticed that it seems to be confined to the edges or very near to the edges.

Did you wet flat the primer?

If you did then it wasnt fully dry before laying on the colour, the sun we have had has caused the primer, which is still soft, to move - which has cracked the colour.
Last summer the top coat was still soft enough to move with the primer, but now its had a year to harden up its cracked.

Too much hardener is a common cause of that, it can crack over time.
