Hi completely new to this so pls bear with me.....I've come back to mini and in a fit of madness this am bought a 1982 1000 hle auto, because she was called Nelly and I fell in love. Now what do I do with her, is there anyone out there who has an auto and can give me some advice what to look for and as she has been sitting on a drive since MOT in September, which she passed no probs, what should I do first. Things like an oil change I know are needed asap what else do you think I should do immediately. All advice will be really welcome.

A full service wouldn't go a miss - Is there anything that came up on the MOT?

Change the oil....

If you can get the engine warm first and then switch off and drop the oil, fit new filter element and depending upon the colour, ie if it's completely black, get some cheap oil from the super market ( at least 5 litres ), refill with the cheap stuff, go for a drive ( make sure you go through all gears and reverse ) getting the engine/oil back up to temp, and then drop that too, keep doing this with fresh oil until it comes out approximately the same colour it went in...

Basically what you're doing is flushing any old crappy oil out of the system, as much of the old oil will remain in the torque converter and gearbox.

Then and only then replace with good quality 10/40 mineral.

Auto's are VERY fussy, and are prone to failure if not serviced regularly ( recommend oil change every 3k miles )

I agree with the master But I would pop in a bottle of enging flushing oil first then run engine for 20 mins (its best jacked up to do this...wheels off the ground) and move stick up and down all auot gears This will flush out and clean all the little needles in the auto box............good luck .............an auto expert passed this onto me ....... :D

mr nelly 2010 here... i recall almost every night the words "till death do us part"

first thing is getting her back home first (a run of about 20 miles? ) she starts runs etc...presume safe enough to risk that journey?

Check your fluids etc before setting off just in case, but a 20 mile journey should be ok for a car with an MOT and no problems, then you can do the servicing when its back to yours.

Decided to pop her into garage for a new MOT a couple of things came up (corroded brake pipe, steeering wheel joint) so we got them sorted. Collected her today... mmm I also drive a CLK auto and VW with DSG 'box...auto's have come a long way havent they?

Away for a week now so shell have to sit all alone, on the drive poor thing! then its a run to get her properly warmed up ;D)
