Hi All,

I have a 1972 Mini at the moment. I am looking to replace the current engine (which has blown) with a complete MPI setup. I want the benefits of the reliability which is inherant in a fuel injection engine but still retain the original A Series Engine.

I wondered if there is anyone else on here that has done this type of conversion before and would be able to give me pointers. I know that there is going to be a bit more wiring and also changes to fuel tank, fuel lines etc. I am on the look out for a complete rusted out Sportspack MPI Mini, so would have access to all of the components - hopefully!

Any information would be gratefully received...

As you already know, you will need literally everything from the MPi Mini... The front subby will be different (its got a front mounted rad)

The MPi system uses an electric fuel pump so you'll need to drop the rear subby to allow you to get the fuel pipes off (and then the tank etc)

Hard work, but it's very possible.

Fancy taking a look at Reggie again? >_<

We've done an MPi conversion on Reggie! :P

Yep - You need a replacement fuel tank, fuel lines, loom...

If you're looking at putting the front mounted radiator in, you'll have to either get an MPi subframe, or drill holes in the original, as the MPi mounts further back.

Make sure you get the ECU, Alarm and Fob from the same car - Otherwise you're stuck, lol - like I was, lol.

If you want to know anything, lemme know - You're more than welcome to come and take a look. His engine will actually be out again soon, as his gearbox has gone, so I can't bring him to you at the moment!!

Think you've got my number? Just drop me a line! :geek:

Ahh, Bean! I had a momentary memory lapse there!! Possibly one of my closest enthusiasts (and there cant be that many of us in Hereford!) I should have remembered. I havent had the pleasure of seeing Reggie yet, so when I'm a bit closer to actually getting the donor I might just give you a shout.

Is there any reason that you *must* use the MPI front mounted radiator? I was hoping to be able to get away with still using the side rad. Even with a Supercharger I have never had any cooling issues with my current setup.

Good point about the ECU/Alarm/Fob etc, but just out of interest how do things go when you replace the ECU with something like an Emerald? I am thinking along those lines as I might be Supercharging the MPI over the winter and this would need to be considered.

I dont have your number any more unfortunately - multiple phone changes since you came round a couple years back means it has disappeared! If you wouldnt mind PM'ing it to me, that would be marvellous.

Cheers Bean! >_<

No problemo!! >_<

Using the side mounted radiator is fine - We have the side one and I've never had any cooling issues.

If you do that though - Be aware that you will need to do something else with the temperature sensor. On the standard MPi, it sticks out the side of the sandwich plate, off the thermostat housing. However ... It fouls the fan if you put it there!!

We plan to put it in the head, on the driver's side ... (in the moulding where the old heater tap used to go)?

Also - You will find that because you're using a side mounted rad, your top hose will foul the alternator bracket (it's massive on an MPi, lol) ... if you can get your hands on an SPi top hose, some of them are flattened and would fit a lot better.

Also - because you haven't got the take-off for the front mounted radiator in the hoses, you might want to use an SPi main hose (for the water pump, radiator etc) - We've got one on Reggie and it, obviously, fits the bottom joint on the radiator much better than the MPi one.

If you're using the side rad, the MPi can bolt straight on to your existing subby :P

What are you thinking about doing with the brakes? I have the standard 86 servo in mine - I didn't want the larger, later one. It actually helped, as it give a lot more space in the engine bay to mount the ECU, relay box etc!

Er... hope this helps! If I think of something else, I'll let you know!! :geek:

Oh - And don't be so sure! We've got 62 members on the forum now! www.bullseyeminiclub.co.uk!! >_<

By the way ... this isn't the Domino we're talking about, is it!? :geek:

Could use a side mounted rad and fit a Kenlowe 9" fan to it (not sure if it'll help solve the water pump problem)?
