There are often threadds asking this, but here is the basics of it.
FIRST do an oil and filter change. I recommend 10w40 oil.
See if that helps. If not, then the nex thing to try is tightening the selector cable. Under the car, near the sump plug on the gearbox, is a cable with a tension adjuster. Try tightening the cable a bit. To set it you have to do the following; set the car in Neutral. Select reverse, and note where in the travel of the lever it bites the gear. Then put back to neutral, and put it into first. See how far between gears THAT bites. Try and adjust the cable so that these are equal, the travel either side of neutral that it selects gear.
If THAT doesnt work, then there is a way you can adjust the brake bands inside the gearbox. Drain the oil. Undo one engine mount and carefully jack the engine up on that side to raise it slightly. Undo the 15 or so little 3/8" bolts that hold the plate on the front of the gearbox (you will see it when you remove the grill). Inside, there are some adjusters you will see, three of them. Loosen the locknuts you can see on them and tighten them all the way solid til the arms dont move. Then, undo them I think it is 11 flats. **Check this in a book somewhere**. Then tighten the locknut back on and repeat for the other 2 adjusters. Put new gasket on or make new one from gasket paper, tighten front plate onto gearbox and refill with oil.
If that doesnt work then good luck.....
