Hi all,

Just wondering how many miles people have done and under what conditions (commuting, weekend drives, track / hillclimb, etc)?

Also, what sort of maintenance / reliability issues have you had?

I'm personally up to ~600 miles, with 250 to 300 being on the track, and the remainder commuting and the occasional blast around the block.

As for reliability, my car has been rock solid, after I addressed a skipping idler, and installed an auxilliary oil cooler with a fan to help cool the beastie. I am noticing some wear on the input shaft splines to the jack shaft / diff box though, and am wondering if this is to be expected....hmmm.

I have done about 2000 of pure hell! Maintenance every-time i go out Reliability is ok but i was one of the first so wasnt as refined as urs (is now  maybe slightly better ) I have broke most things twisted the frame snapped the front bearing & frame. chains sprockets the lot etc  but it seems to be bedding in now with it all properly aligned etc.

As for the splines if it wasnt tight when you installed it & if it isnt perfectly straight with the sprocket and chain you will be buying another pretty soon as it will just tear them off

Lovely mini matey! keep us upto date!

All best Basky

Hi Basky,

Sounds like you have the right attitude! That's the thing with the diff input shaft on my box - with the collar on it, and the bolt fully tight, there is still a bit of side play - I thought it was to allow a bit of self alignment, but now I'm wondering if that is the case that the hardness of the steel is too soft. Everyting is properly aligned though. Here's an attached picture of what I found when I removed the box to fix a leaking axle shaft seal:

I can't get in touch with either Phil or Darren via e-mail or IM, otherwise I wouldn't have publicised this, but I need some thoughts from others.

Cheers,

Aric

I have asked myself what would happen if you put two sprockets and chains next to each other? would this reduce the load on the one sprocket system.

in the six weeks or so mines been on the road ive done about six hundred miles and so far not had to touch anything, other than change gear ratio, i lube chain every weekend, and i have made my own fixed chain tensioner to get rid of the spring loaded one, my only consern has been cooling, fan spends a lot of time on if i dont have heater on, and ive seen water temps of 109 at high revs, so might have to improve cooling system in the near future, i drive my mini quite hard and r1 engine and promo kit have so far stood up well and i have no doubt an a series with anything near this power thashed like this would of blown up or exploded a gearbox by now, i have also been wondering (as i used to own a buell) as to whether a belt could be used instead of the chain, very clean and quiet, amyone any veiws on this ?

belt drive why not, the boys in the US use them for big bikes. I have found companys that make wheels and belts

I've thought about this too - one of the issues is going to be finding small enough pulleys and a belt of the right length but the biggest will be that the belts they use on Harleys and similar bikes over here are REALLY WIDE (over 2" typically).

I have to ask how critical is the lining up of the diffrent sprockets? this is going to contribute too spline wear if its not correct.
I found the link from engine output and front sprocket is not in line, I was not able to fit the adapter until i moved the bearing housing around.

Most snowmobiles use drivebelts, the Yamaha RX-1 uses one that's about 1 3/8 in. wide. The thing is that with that much horsepower the replacement interval is ~2000 miles or so.

How about something like a cam timing chain with tripple the thickness, dont they last about 100k kms, still though they wouldnt be moving much if at all really.... hhmmm
