Pretty sure they are not supposed to be used on the rocker cover bolts?

The only ones I know of are used once the head is off then you slot them on a couple of the head bolts coming out of the block and put the nuts back on.

As far as I know they are meant to bolt on with the rocker cover, some other cars that had an A series engine but with more room in the engine bay had them fitted when they came out the factory

Yes just use the rocker cover bolts and just give them a nip up with the spanner.

I have done 3 engine out and back in with mine and no problems. I used a steel bar between the two brackets to spread the load, but some people make up some angle iron with hooks on.

hi ive used them numeres times on the rocker cover bolts and theve allways been fine you can get another engine lift that is a big bracket and actually tilts the engine so the diff will come past the subframe and that bolts on the same place

I always use one 'L'-shaped bracket (I all it my 'skyhook') which bolts onto the centre front head stud. It tilts the whole engine the correct amount and it's a 3/8" dia stud, so it's plenty strong enough.
Incidentally, if you bend the 'L' open a bit, you can turn the braket around, use a 3/8" UNC bolt and then the block is held virtually horizontal in both diretions when lowering it back onto the gearbox, making it a one-man job to fit engine to box. In fact I did just that in a few minutes yesterday afternoon.
