Recently dismantled 1275 engine. The crank shows wear marks, will it need a grind, or can it be polished?

All journals show similar wear marks, engine had done around 45,000 miles I think.

It's impossible to tell without actually seeing and measuring it.

Ideally it needs to be measured properly to tell but I would go with a grind seeing as you have the engine apart

What are the bearings like? Do they show signs of wear corresponding to the marks on the journals?

I am just loading up some pictures of them now so you can have a quick look, what needs to be measured? how much will a re-grind cost?

A decent re-grind will cost c.£70 in VAT. It's worth doing as you know that it'll be right then.

Is there anywhere in the Bristol area that will do this?

There looks to be quite a bit of wear on the bearing shells. So some wear on the crank seems likely. You may as well buy the shells a size under and get the crank ground. You'll have to buy shells anyway so why waste time & money measuring the journals when it's likely they'll need a grind as well. Grinding bearings should be bread 'n butter for any machine shop.

Thing is the journals can be relatively smooth & be anything but round and within tolerance. I guess depends as much on what you're doing with it when it's back together. Personally, I'd happily spend a few extra quid to try and delay the cost and effort of another strip down.

Does feel ok in the finger nail, but I will take it down to the place that cleaned my head, and get him to take a look, and if I can get away with a polish I will as the costs are already stacking up.
