Hi everyone,

my car has developed a gurgling noise in the water tank and seems to spout out water every once in a while. The strange thing is, I can't find any leak whatsoever. I've taken the tank out, checked the pipes, checked underneath the tank and all seems well. Also the water level more or less stays the same and according to the water temp needle everything is happy.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

thnx.

Does your electric fan kick in when the engine is hot. The wiring to mine had corroded and I had similar symptoms.
Also I think mine did this shortly before my water pump packed in.

Good Luck

yep...definitely kicks in. I remember getting home last night and it was running for a couple of mins after i had switched the engine off.

It might be worth trying a new rad cap (I am assuming spi) as the spring pressure goes over time I believe (sorry for being so untechnical)

The rad is different isnt it ?
to be honest I am not 100% about mpis and their cooling system as I have no experience of one.
On an spi (as with earlier minis) they have a metal rad cap which has a spring inside rated according to which engine
e.g my spi has a 15lb cap

MPIs have a plastic cap on the coolant reservoir which may act differently than a cap on the rad.

Mine was gurgling after I had driven it and switched off the engine. It was quite hot (cooling fan had came on, but I don't have any cooling fan problems).

I didn't really think much of it. Had a look under the bonnet to see where it was coming from. It was air moving from the reservoir to the top hose, and coolant from the top hose was moving in the the reservoir. As the top hose is the highest point of the cooling system I guessed this was normal.

I figured when driving this wouldn't happen because the coolant is under pressure and being pumped.
