im planning on spraying my car in next few weeks and the MOT if a few weeks after

does it matter if the colour of the car on the log book and what it is are different when being mot'd?

When you take the car for MOT, you can ask the guy to change the details for you through his system. Mine did it for my son!

When a car is tested the registration number and part or whole VIN number are put into the testing computer, which then displays more information about the car called "vehicle specific information" which helps the tester to determine he is testing the correct car. Colour is one of these pieces of information and if you present a red car but the database says it is white the tester will then alter the colour in the relevant box if he is happy he is testing the correct car.
As a tester this has only happened to me once and it was a friends vehicle. I understand he got a letter fron DVLA about it later. My advice is to send in the V5c with the changes recorded before the test (V5C is not required for the test) to try to avoid this situation although I don't think it carries any penalties.

On a different side, you'll be insuring a car with whatever registration number your car is that is whatever colour it is. Therefore if you change the colour, it'll invalidate your insurance. Best to respray it and send the V5 off to the DVLA. Only costs you a stamp so well worht doing.

However they will only change the colour if you can send them a recipt for the work that has been done - they wont change mine from Red to green due to not having a recipt/invoice.

But they will change it on the MOT as they have done this for me this week

I sent off my V5 a couple weeks ago and just filled in the new colour in the box , got a V5 back 3 days later with the colour ammended. Not sure why you would need the invoice.

Never had an issue changing colour on a log book, only engine change you need a letter for.
