The first Mini Automatics were 850cc and were introduced at the Earls Court Motor Show in October 1965, total cost with the AP Auto transmission option was £560 for the standard model or £606 for the Deluxe, very few autos actually reached the showrooms before 1966 as it took almost a year to reach proper production, so the Mk1 Auto is a very rare car now as the Mk2 Auto was introduced in October 1967.

I think I read first Mini auto had received a reward because it was well engineered.

by the way, I am looking for a period test of an auto Mk1 ; I'd like to know performance of the auto 850.

Also, have a look here : http://autominiregister.proboards.com/

The AP (Automotive Products) Automatic Transmission was the result of a 10 year joint project between the Automotive Products Company Ltd. in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England and the British Motor Corporation Ltd. in Longbridge, Birmingham, England. This unique transmission had many achievements:

* It is possibly the only automatic in the world to run on engine oil.
* It was far ahead of it's time and won the Queen's Award to Industry at the 1965 motor show. :D
* It is considered the forerunner of the modern "automatic/manual" transmission.
* It is considered the first automatic fitted to a transverse mounted engine.
* It is considered the first automatic fitted to a mass produced small car.
* There have been numerous upgraded versions of this transmission and it was still in production for use in the Mini until 2000.
* An internal auxiliary pump allows the vehicle to be tow started.

Automatic was available on the Mini Clubman and Clubman Estate's but not the 1275GT. When the manual Clubman changed to 1098cc in 1975 the automatic Clubman option continued with the 998cc engine only.
