hi is it legal to make your own towbar as i have a centre exhaust and dont want to swap it so what to make one to go round it then is it a good idea just to bolt it to the rear subframe?

i think the tow bars that shops sell just bolt to the subby matey im gonna make my own at some point because i dont fancy payin em alot fot something i cud make for like 20quid

I think you're OK to make your own and fit it a to a pre '96 mini. Anything after that needs a real towbar (for want of a better name0

i was think of maybe using 40mmx40mm 4mm box section steel and can i bolt to the subframe and thats it or will i have to bolt it to the sheel also?

The one that was in minimag bolted through the seat floor, but I can't see what being a good idea if its also bolted to the subby with rubber bushes?

40x40x4 box, what on earth are you towing??
Thats gonna be nearly 2" of ground clearance you've lost as well.

I think you will find there are legal implications..... there has been some discussion on this subject before, I would do a search if I was you...

hi i have had a search and as long as the trailer with load is under 405 kg which it will be so should be all ok. also my car is 1991 so i can tow.
could someone reccomend the best places to bolt it to? would be a great help. also the size and thickness of the steel.
the only reason i asked this is that i dont really want to change my exhaust everytime as i have a motor bike exhaust coming out of the middle and there is a tow bar on ebay pre made but you cant use a centre exit and to be honist i will only have the tow bar on when i need it i will just take it off.
