Hi there,

first questions to the forum!

i am both a bit rubbish with cars and rather nervous about doing stuff to them so be gentle with me.

1st one is simple... anybody got a recommendations for good 6x9s for under the rear seats... i'm guessing they're much of a muchness around 40-50 quid but i will happily take suggestions. (i bought a board already - from minispares)

2) do i need to do more than screw them into the board? i see pictures of boxes around them. some people talk about foam as well... ?

3) i can just run the wires under the edge of the carper can't i?

i think that's it... i've not looked yet but i'm guessing that i need to drill holes in some metal work and then screw the board into place?

thank you - and i am used to forum etiquette from elsewhere and have had a pretty hard look for this stuff on here already but i think my technical uselessness is unlike anything seen before on here!

Hey.

Sorry, I cant help you with the first question, but;

2) im not sure how thick the board is from minispares as i made mine myself (cost me £3 :) ) if its not all that thick, glue some blocks of wood onto the back of the board where the screws come through, in my experience they sound better if they are mounted better...

3) yes, i ran mine under the carpet, under the beam under the front two seats then up behind the heater to my head unit.

Good luck!

I have JBL 6x9's under my rear seats, they're pretty good and at the time of purchase, retailed for about £40. Best 6x9's come from Alpine, JBL, JL Audio and maybe MTX :o

Right now, the only thing holding the board under the seats is the shell itself. I made mine myself, and the board is such a snug fit it doesn't need screws  makes removing it easy!

I run the wires under the carpeting.

Drilling holes in the metal is optional, although lining the board in foam may be a good thing to do. Haven't done it myself, though.

Don't bother with boxes on 6x9's, not only is the space under the rear seats of good size for the speakers, boxes are only really used on subwoofers anyway.

Be sure to put the grilles on, i lost mine and a week or so later a passenger broke one of the tweets off with his heel :)

1st) Any 6x9's will do. They're all pretty samo samo. Try and get a decent-ish brand though for best performance like JBL, Pioneer, Alpine etc. Even their lower range lines are better than some more expensive units made by lesser brands.

2nd) Yeah, you'll need to screw them into the board. You can either go stealth (which i prefer) and screw them in from behind so you can't see them, or normal by screwing them in from the front on top of the carpet. You don't need to cover the speakers behind, so long as you've got a decent seal where the board sits under the rear bench. Most boards will fit the cars just by wedging themselves in position, but if its not a good fit, you can screw it in place by going through the rear bench into the top of the board.

3rd) Running the wires under the carpet is fine - theres no other way to do it.

You couldn't be more wrong there sorry - any device that creates noise (that's not designed to work in free air) will benefit hugely from enclosures.

Agreed, An enclosure boosts the lower frequency response of any device, its just not common to use on a speaker due to size limitations, but for something like an under seat install, where theres tonnes of room behind, its perfect!

You sure would - just like subwoofers.

well... i tried fixing them behind the board... it didn;t work...

so i'm back inside and have now fixed them through the board.

the wiring worked (only couple of crimps needed helping hand with some insulating tape!) and am itching to go and try it but not sure i can justify rooting around wiring them up again with a headtorch on... :D(

they look fab. am very happy. thank you all

Just my 2 cents but that's a great place for sub(s). Audio geeks will tell you that the best place for your midrange and tweeters is pointing at you from the front if you're concerned about sound quality. Unless you're installing a sub-there's really no need for speakers in the back of this tiny car. When somebody makes a decent enclosure/pods for the front, we will all be a lot happier. I hate playing with fiberglass resin.
