I popped in to Moss to get the rebuild parts for the 1275, and he asked me what colour bearing shells I needed, :D

1993 sprite 1275 engine, there is no code on the old shells, can anybody shed any light, or can i just guess?

As far as I'm aware, there's no colour codes for bearings?

Has the crank had a regrind? First of all you need to have a good look at the old shells, look at the back at either end of the bearing and there should be markings. If the crank has never had a grind then it should have the marking STD for Standard or if it has something like 010 or 020etc If your not going to regrind the crank then you need to match the new bearings to this marking and make sure the new shells match your engine if it is an A+ or just an A

Crank has been polished but not reground. And its an A+.

Thats what I said to moss, be they reckon that they were colour coded, and there are 3 types of standard, and these are the colour codes.

Honda motor bikes have colour coded shells, but minis don't.

I've never heard of this. I just bought a standard set of 1275 shells.

I believe the big end journal is 1.75" wide and the cooper s 1275 engine was 1.65" wide, the only differences I know of.

I have NEVER seen shells sold individually (upper/lower).

Skip Moss. Buy the set from Somerford or someone else like Mini Spares. It will cost you less money and you'll be more assured of having the right parts.

Dan or Sprocket (can't remember which) know about this. The journals were graded in the factory as Yellow or Green (possibly red too) and you will oftern see stamped into the block near the centre journal YYY or YGY or similar which is the grading given to each journal. I think it is to do with the tolerance of roundness.

However as said, no-one buys bearings to suit this anymore and simply buys sets. Plus, looking at your list, Yellow ones are NLA anyway and you only have the option of Green!

Bearings shell sets should always be bought to suit the size of the reground journal.
Journals are ground to a tolerance. Even if its only 0.001”.clearance (sample size)
And bearings shells are made to a tolerance, ( usually split into three fits within this tolerance and most companies designated them by colour.) This is to give the recommended amount of running clearance to fit the journal.
If you fit a set of bearing shells made to the upper diameter of there tolerance (big internal dia.) to a shaft journal ground to the low side of its tolerance (small outside diameter) you have in effect built an engine with some bearing clearance The equivalent of miles of wear. Just how much is open to all sorts of arguments but the clearance is these.
Ideally the Shaft should be measured / sized accurately and Shells bought to suit

Thanks for the replies, I will have a look at the block when I get home. And go from there if I have to have the crank measured I will. (its not been re-ground though, just polished.
