Hey folks.
Got a spare engine in my garage and I wouldn't mind starting it. Only for the reason of seeing if it will and trying some ideas out. Thing is, engine is free on the floor with nothing holding it down and starting a large lump of metal that contains explosions is a bad idea.
SO!
How should I go about starting an engine outside of a car WITHOUT it killing me or anyone else. Should I wrangle a spare front subframe and build up parts to hold the engine or should I make my own cradle, or am I wrong and it will be find to start?
Ta for any advice. I tried the search but "mini engine start" as a search tends to turn up a lot of stuff I don't need.

Just don't be so stupid and have your petrol tank/can inches away from a hot burning manifold.

I just hooked up a long clear tube hanging from the garage roof attached to the carb inlet, enough petrol in the tube alone to start it
its easy enough
12v supply to a coil positive for starting for such a small time doesn't matter if ballast or non ballast.
wire from dizzy to coil negative.
then I used jump leads, negative just clamped on to block
positive I just used direct on the starter terminals.
and yes 14 seconds in that is a little trump

Well I'll be, I always thought the engine would try and walk around killing itself or me.
I'll have to give it a try now.
Ta chaps.

This is not a bad idea. I did it as I didn't want to stuff a lump in that didn't have oil pressure, so we just put it on a table and fired it up!
