MG metro
1988
during my first proper run in the Minus (1275cc MG Metro engine) my temp gauge went up and down from around 87 c to as high as 96 c.
when it hit 94 c or more i was putting the heater on to help the temp drop.
what are peoples opinions on engine temp and what is normal or too high? what would be normal operating temp?

Normal is whatever your thermostat is set at! So - 88 degree stat, the engine should rise quickly to ~ 88 and then settle around that point. Do you have good airflow through the rad ? I would try a 74 degree stat in summer - and see how that goes.

well the stat is an 88 c one but being a minus there isnt quite as much air flowing through the grill plus the rad is a lot higher up. but the bonnet is proped open so i would assume heat could escape easier.
on the motorway going up hills it would quickly rise to around 96c and more probably if i didnt stick the heater on.
dont forget the temp of the day was about 25c so it was a hot day!

what sender are you using? i had trubles with my metro sender, but swapped it for a known good one from a mini. I also popped a thermometer in the coolant to read the actual temperature. My (aftermarket) gauge reads about 20 degrees over the actual thermometer water temp!
