hello all, on monday i got very very bored. . so i decided to make my self a drop bracket

ive made it 1" than the standard bracket and is still adjustable. . .

well heres a picture. . ..

its rough but it does the job ( going to make a couple more for some of our minis, and get them spot on)

steering column is going to be extended also

the reason i made this is because my bucket seat sits very low down

and even a 6ft+ bloke struggles to see over the steering wheel :L

just like to know if extending the column and making my own stuff would cause any problems?

cheers

I would much rather go for one of these (long comp. type):
http://mk1-performan...hop/page30.html

In my opinion those cheap adjusters are too wobbly & weak even in 'std. lenght'!
The brackets linked above are realy rigid and sound.
You can certainly feel a difference over these cheap brackets made of cheese... ;D

The steering column is held in place and doesn't flex around anymore...

I fear that flexing and wobbling get's worse with your extended bracket. But try it - you never know.
Maybe your perfektely happy with it - so don't let me rain on your parade! :-

Cheers,
Jan

Looking at the price you should make a few of them.
Slacken the 4 s. rack bolts on inside of car while fitting bracket then re-tighten them.Things line up better for steering.Good to replace the steering Bush at the same time. They always wear out and fail MOT on play. You have found a quality strong Bolt Good.I always also used to adjust mine.
A Rev. Counter is a must to.I would always get a good one from the breakers.

On a secong thought: maybe you can adopt the principle of construction to your own bracket. But hat still leaves you with a two piece bracket, though. The Mk1-P-C bracket does it all in a single piece and replaces the factory bracket too. And don't copy it - suport the manufacturer and maybe we'll see more fancy stuff in the future! :shifty:

Why not buy the one in the link? I know the guy who makes them puts alot of effort and design into it. Not saying that Gregh's would be poor but ateast try and support the guy making them?

Nowt against the guy, im just not exactly wishing to spend £40 on something i dont really need. Gregs would be fairly cheap and i can add it in to the mini to improve the look.

Aren't any of you guys worried about messing up the splines on the steering rack by forcing the column to sit at an angle to them? It's seem s like you should fit a UJ to the bottom of the column if you want to drop it really low.

you loosen the bolts for the steering rack which lets it turn. so no more pressure should be being put through the rack in any case as you let it turn and then nip it back up when your column is where you want it.
