Hi... I wonder if someone can help me?

my standard 998 (bar a k&n) runs fine but the throttle response isn't up to much.
But when I pull the choke out a little the throttle response is superb, although, obviously tick over is a bit fast... this happens when the engine is cold or warm.
This may be typical of the 998 engine, I don't know, as its the first 998 i've had.
But theres gotta be a better way to have a better acceleration, other than using the choke????

When you pull the choke out a little, not only are you increasing the idle, but also the mixture, it sounds like you are running lean..

As you say your car is fairly std, it's probably running an HS4, therefore the JET adjustment is on the bottom of the carb, give the lower of the larger nuts half a turn clockwise ( looking from the top of the carb ) this will richen the std mixture.

I would suggest you get a tune up. Pulling out the choke is essentially making the car richer, if it runs better like this when it is warm, then maybe it is running a little lean?

You don't want to be running on the choke all the time!

so basically the mixture needs to be set twice a year? for warm and cold climates?

No, you don't need to get your car retuned for winter or summer. You do however have to get it retuned when you fit a K&N as the new filter flows a lot more air than standard and the carb isn't setup for it. Funnily enough if you don't get the thing tuned for the K&N it will run lean, sound familiar? You need to sort this soon, as we go into the winter it will get leaner and very lean engines blow holes in their pistons.
