1989 City E
I've been driving the mini round, and today a knocking sound started. When the car is out of gear the engine runs nicely, but when you start moving the knocking start, when I first started to notice it, it was only happening in the lower revs, now its all through the rev range, in every gear, but still worst in the lower end. Anyone got any ideas on what it could be? My Dad thinks it could be an engine mount or something loose, this would match up with why the steering wheel shakes when it knocks too.
Thanks in Advance.

Just about to put it on some ramps. Shall yet you know. The top mount is rusty, but not moving.

Update, nothing obvious, on the out side, but something I realised when moving it on and off the ramps, is it knocks under strain, it'll idle fine and as soon as you put it in gear and try to move it knocks. And moving it off the ramps I noticed some smoke and a oily burning.
Sound like a big end? Time for a rebuild?

Check the bracket for the top engine mount on the bulkhead that rests under the brake and clutch cylinders hasn't rusted also check the little bracket underneath the top engine mount thats welded to the bulkhead and also connects the clutch host to the clutch pipework hasn't rusted. It could simply be that as you put load on the engine it moves the engine steady around in its rusted mounts as I found out with mine yesterday!
