Ever since i'v owned a mini, the petrol guage has always confused me.

The guage has 3 lines - Full, half-full and red line.

The halfway line however is a lot closer to the red line than full - so is that actually half-full or more like 2/3 empty?

How much is left when the needle blocks the red out or when the point is on the bottom of the red?

Am i the only one who thinks its really poorly designed/displayed?

I would put up a picture but im sure everyone knows what i mean.

None of them are accurate anyway, so don't rely on the gauge reading at any time.

Just use it as a general guide, i try to keep mine at least half full on the gauge so i know theres something in there to get me where i need to be, or a petrol station without having to worry about conking outta fuel :)

I try and keep my take at least a bit over the red line. I dont like running it low other wise it starts sucking all the crap out the bottom on the tank.

when mine is on the red it has around £10 left in it, if you look at the guage, the red line is actually above the E marking empty!

I always hear people say this but my pick up pipe has a small mesh/fabric filter on the end so cant see how it is posible with and inline fuel filter as well wich are like 99p.

injection minis have a fuel filter on the rear subframe, quite a big one compared to the small inline ones i have seen added to carb minis! well mine had been the original one untill i brought the car, we cut it open and it was just full, needless to say it goes a lot better now to when i brought it!

i dont understand the whole thing of keeping it above a certain point though? i mean, the fuel isnt going to be pumped from the top of the tank is it!?

No, but its always nice to know you have fuel in the tank, once you filled up once, it doesnt cost anymore to keep the tank at half full as opposed to empty

A tenner left?? Really, that would seem like a lot because it takes about £30 to fill up from running on fumes - in theory that would still leave the tank 1/3 full??

What confuses me most is that on average, say petrol prices are 118.9 it costs me usually about £25 to fill up from where the needle point is just about to dip below the bottom of the red line, but yesterday i paid £30 for pretty much exactly the same amount. Although a fiver might not seem much, its still an extra 4.5 litres that i jut seem to have found out of thin air.

I think il be replacing the float and all along with a new guage soon just so i can be more certain about how much iv got left to run on.

well think about it, when it was around £5/gallon it cost me 25ish to fill it up from the red, i have a 7.5 gallon tank in an injection, i therefore have 2.5 gallons left, so its around £10-£12.50 left in there!
