my weber 45 i bought off ebay appears to be cracked.see picture. looks like one of the screws has been overtightenned and cracked the case on the underside of the carb. pictures not the best but its all i have as i dont have the car at my place.
without going into the safety aspect,(fire hazard etc) would chemical metal work on the crack? ie would petrol eat through the chemical metal
also have no idea what the screw holds in? theres two and they hava a sort of lock tab on them .
if chemical metal or similar product wouldnt work can anyone recommend what to do or is it scrap?
i just need to get the car running so i can fix the clutch then i can sort out getting a new weber if need be. but at the minute i cant afford another £150 plus for a weber

I cracked the float chamber ron mu SU's when the engine mount failed. I tried chemical metal, which was "impervious to petrol" and it proved useless the thing failed in 48 hours.
The resolution was a new float chamber............. Sorry.

If you are getting fuel leaking out of the crack it is unlikely that chemical metal will stay in place, the heat from the engine will expand the body of the carb and re split the joint.
(unfortunately been there done that)
The crack may also allow in air which could mess up the mixture of the carb and cause poor running.
Look out for another carb is my thoughts, shame you got done over by an eBay seller.

as the body is aluminium, could you get a locel machine shop to weld it up with a TIG welder?
Iv come a cross this a few times with customers cars and one of my own the crack can be repaired and save you spending out on a new floatchamber or carb. Do you have Tig welder or an alloy welder?

we've got tig here Ben - ask alex nicely he might give it a go for you, but you need to get rid of all traces of petrol first LOL
Really interested to see if this works for you, I could have saved a load of cash on my old twin 45's if I knew they could be tig welded.
