i've rebuilt an mg metro engine for my clubvan. spent 1/2 an hour today, cleaning & spraying up a heater control valve (the thing that bolts onto the head) when i went to fit it, i've found that the angle of it when fitted means that the hose connection will foul the breather which is bolted onto the inner clutch housing.
on my old mini engine the cylinder head holes for the control are not at the same angle.
any tips please ??

What I did was to cut the stem of the breather down by about 1 inch and then re weld it at an angle that allowed it to clear the servo and heater valve.
Another way is to use the metro heater valve, which fits in line with the heater pipes. that way all you need is the heater take off adaptor from minispares, bolted to the head in the same place as the valve you are trying to fit. It allows the pipe to come of the head in a vertical possition well away from the breather.

Hope this helps, sorry i tried to take a picture of mine but its to dark.

i forgot to say, that when i bought the engine there was a home made fitting with a connection for the heater pipe fitted where the control valve fits on a normal mini head.
if i use this & no heater valve, will the car still warm up if the heater fan is switched off ?

If you mean will the heater work then yes it will, but you wont be able to stop the hot water from circulating through the heater matrix. Basicly you will have the heater on all the time, Ok the fan wont be on but you will still get hot air into the car. Not very nice in the summer.
Im prety sure the mini suppliers still stock the in line type of valve.

sorry to sound thick, but if i fit an in line valve how will the control cable work ? doesn't it need to be securely fitted to the head or bolted onto something solid ?
thanks

The in line valve is designed to acept the cable and not be fixed to anything solid. Some people secure them others just leave them floating. Woks both ways.
