1 1/2 inch is 38mm if im right, and 1 1/4 is about 32mm, how are you measuring them? Get a picture up of them.
1 1/4" carbs only have two screws holding the dashpot on, 1 1/2" carbs have 3 screws.

they are deffinantly 35 mm, measured using a tape measure, and the's 3 screws holding the dashpot on.
they are from an mgb gt and i was going to mod the manifold to make them fit, oh well i will just have to send them back!

The size is measured at the throttle/engine side.

They're obviously HIF carbs, and if they're off an MGB, then they're probably HIF4's - if either has the metal tag still on one of the dashpot screws, the code can tell you for sure if you look it up on Burlen Fuel Systems' website. These should be 38mm (just over one-and-a-half inches) on the engine side - you're showing the filter side in your photo. Also, a tape measure isn't the ideal tool for measuring these - can you get hold of a vernier caliper? Even the cheap ones have the facility to measure an internal diameter.

early chrome bumper mgbs used the hs4 carbs, later rubber bumper ones use the hif38s, never heard of hif44s being fitted to one as standard.

Hif4 not hif44. They didn't use dual hif38's because they went to hif's before the metric versions were around. As I said, check Burlen Fuel Systems own website, or any MGB owner's club - they'll tell you that they're HIF4's.
