righty ho, i just sold my Eunos Roadster (mx5) on ebay and the guy who bought it says that it was stolen in 1997 and written off in 98, but the car itself was only imported in 2007?

does anyone know if the number plate holds details of the previous car it was on?

heres what he says he found out...

Hi, if you go to experian autocheck webiste and do a check on H236 GBD, there is a lot of warnings about your car, such as Insurance Write-off Details

This car is recorded as being a write-off due to a theft related claim on 09/07/1998.

Status is VEHICLE HAS BEEN STOLEN.

Have you found this out for yourself or are you just taking the buyer's word for it? What is he asking from you?

its just what he says at the moment, but he isn't saying he's not going to buy the car, but he also hasn't asked to arrange a time to pick it up. do you think its worth me doing a hpi check, if it does come back like he said, what can i do? it is'nt stolen recovered in 1998 because the car was'nt here in 1998? and the same goes for being written off? i dont particually want to be £20 out of pocket.

The long and short of it is, YOU should have done an HPI/Vehicle check before buying the car, and if you bought it from a dealer then they, by law, will have provided you with one...

So, situation now, when the car was imported it will have gone through an VIC/IVA and assigned an age related plate, it will not have been one which has been used before so there's not going to be any history of a previous vehicle, unless of course the person who imported didn't put it through the VIC and basically used the identity of a previous vehicle ( ringing )

If you want I can run the same check as the person above... will only cost you £3.99

But given the information above I would be contacting the DVLA for further information and an explanation as to why a vehicle which was imported in 2007, is recorded as stolen in 1998, it may be an error or a previous owner may have put their registration on the car via transfer, however the dvla will have details of this and it should be recorded on the check...

Call the DVLA

If it's imported then it seems most likely the registration has been transferred. I can't see it being a ringer: why would the import be recorded if that was the case? I think you'll be lucky to get any straight answers out of the DVLA on the phone, they should be able to explain how to get the info you need though. I guess you'd like proof the plate was on another car with a different VIN/Chassis number.

Right so after phoning the DVLA and them saying everything seems fine, and then going to the Police station to see if it was ever stolen, i thought it best to have proof and got a HPI check from the original providers of hpi's from www.hpicheck.com they returned this...

i have printed the screen as i cant upload pdf's

http://img4.imagesha.../hpicheck4.png/

as you can see the hpi report says everything is good and fine. the guy who bought the car is well moody and hard to get in touch with, what can i do?

Heeeeeeelllllppppp! i just want a mini i can drive :)

If he's bought the car via eBay he should pay you for it. Give him a time period and if the money's not in your pocket by then open a dispute.

Result, however it's interesting to note that Experian had incorrect details for the vehicle, as I use them to check vehicles that I buy.... and as you've had it confirmed by both the DVLA and Police that there was no "interest" in this vehicle as stolen, I may change myself to HPI...

Well done... :D
