Fitted a set of angel eye headlights to my car the other week, and have only recently noticed that something odd is happening with the sidelights.

Basically...
With ignition off, sidelights on - just angel eye ring
With ignition on, sidelights on - angel eye ring and main bulb on dull.

Is there any way of getting it so the sidelights are purely the angel eyes? Even when the ignition is on.

The car is a 1994 Mini 35 carb 1275 (one of the last)

Cheers
Dan

There must be a short somewhere...

The angel eye is just a 501 bulb which lights up the complete ring no?

They are 4 led's each side for the angel, not the filament bulb type. I'm guessing that the angel eyes have been wired up to what would be the parking lights in normal lights, which stay on when the key is out, but are accompanied by the main bulb at a low power when the ignition is on to act as sidelights. I do remember vaguely something about a relay needing removing, but not too sure what and where it would be. Cheers, Dan :withstupid:

i think there is a dim/dip resistor, i disconnected mine, its on the right hand side of the engine bay (looking from the front) and it has thick brown wires going to it, its a black tube looking thing.......sorry i cant decribe it better! There may also be an inline fuse but im not sure on that, maybe brown/orange wire. let someone else confirm this though, dont just go on what i say lol

No, this is normal operation for late 80's to mid 90's cars with dim dip function. The OP would have had the same with his standard headlights, however not paid any attention to it as the sidelights were nothing fancy to look at...

To disable the dim dip function, you can remove the pink relay behind the dash, and connect two of the wires together (i cannot remember which colours to connect though :withstupid:

My son has the exact same car and fitted angel-eye lights to it.
There is a dim/dip relay fitted to the mini 35 (and other minis of the same era).
As already said it is the big pink relay under, or behind, the dash on the driver's side.
just cut and tape up the green wire that feeds the relay and this will disable the dim/dip function.

Awesome, thanks guys. So no re-wiring up needed then? Can I not just remove the relay, atleast I can put it back if I get the wrong one :teehee: instead of cutting the wire?

You could remove the relay if you wanted. My son (in a hurry to get the angel-eyes working) just cut the feed to the relay and has had no problems since.

I sorted it today, removing the relay doesn't work because the headlights don't work atall once it's removed! Cutting the green (or possibly brown, I'm colourblind ;)) wire did the trick :)

Cheers guys!

Dan :)
