Hi there! Has anyone actually used the redex oil leak stuff and does it actually work?

Never used it but I bet it doesn't work! Your money's better put toward actually fixing what is causing the leak.

I had a close encounter with a high speed bump the other day so it may well be the sump as don't have a sump guard yet. Was just wondering if it would work as an interim measure really, until I can get underneath he r and actually check :-

I'd just buy a litre of oil instead and keep your oil topped up.

As I say I've never used it but it sounds like snake oil to me. Why not give it a go and let us know if it works?

I think it only really works for slight seepage through old gaskets etc, nothing too serious, the usual leak points are the gear linkage seal or the sump plug. If you've cracked the sump, you need a new sump, the redex stuff won't do a lot for that..

I do keep my oil topped up! I use classic car oil and check level at least once a week. It's not a major leak by any means thankfully. Just wondering if it gets worse in this hot weather?

Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by 'snake oil'?

It may get a little worse in the hot weather as the heat no doubt thins the oil.

As soon as I'd said it I wasn't sure if I'd said the right thing! However Wiki is your friend.

"In cryptography, snake oil is a term used to describe ... products which are considered bogus or fraudulent. The name derives from snake oil, one type of quack medicine widely available in 19th Century United States."

Mini's are extremely prone to leaks. As long as it's just a small seep it's nothing to lose sleep over. Next time you're under the bonnet/car have a gander and see if you can spot the source :-

If you get a rag and dry the engine all round where the oil may be coming from, and also put something like a bit bit of cardboard under the engine, that way when it starts leaking again you'll find it a lot easier to find the leak.

If your talking about the stuff that you add to your oil then i can say it does work.I had a slight oil leak on my 3.2 diesel shogun crankcase oil seal and i put some of this in.Did the required 200 miles and the leak has now stopped and its done a further 3000 miles. In all honesty though i think its made more for the oil leaks that are coming from rubber o ring type gaskets and seals than the paper type gaskets.
