Model: Mini Cord :-
Year: 1993 998cc (1030cc) A+ with HS4 carb

Description of problem:

After the repairs below, the engine will not rev up past 3500 - 4000 RPM regardless of what gear your in.
The car has power below said RPMs, in fact it picks up and drives really nice below 4000 RPM.
The car also starts first thing regarless of how cold or warm it is.

In chit-chat terms:
The "symptoms" present like this: start driving off (as mentioned it feels nice) when aproaching 3500 RPM its feel as so the engine has problems breathing, you can fell and hear the combustion taking place but no power is developed and the car "muffles itself" not reving past that mark.

What has been done:
I had a head gasket fail due to a slight overheating problem. The over overheating was caused by a leak on the water pump which has been corrected.

The head gasket was replaced (with 1 of poor quality - more on this below) and everything assembled. Valve clearances were checked. Ignition timing checked and left at 7deg adv, as it was before. Spark plugs changed, NGKBP6 used. Leads are quite new so only inspected them. Petronix kit is used so no points to adjust. Electronic Coil is used and not suspected since is quite new as well.

After this later problem was developed, i suspected the carburetor, so i took it down and gave it a good clean up. Problem stills the same.

An intake leak was also suspected so i reassembled making sure the LCB and intake manifold are sitting well. Problem continues the same.

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?
Locally made head gasket.
3-layer gasket, upper and lower layer are copper, middle layer not sure of the material.
Lets just say that this piece couldnt be massively produced due to lack of quality control.

So im out of ideas. I'll appreciate your input.
Thanks in advance.

locally made gasket - for the sake of £15 you could of got a reliable head gasket set.

when you say hits the 3500 mark and sounds like its struggling to breathe - does it sound like fuel?

have you looked at fuel lines, filter, mixture etc?

Is the carb piston definitely free to rise up - and does it fall back with a clunk ? Is there anything that could be blocking the fuel flow - kinked pipe - anything like that ? Is there any way to do a compression test on the cylinders ?

Been a 1993 car i guess it one of the cross over years from carb to spi, so spi bit but no injected carb?.

So if you have a return pipe for the fuel running by the main fuel pipe ( twin fuel pipes under the car ) pull the return pipe off.

Cured mine after 6 month of part money time ect.

Oh and if anyone reads this why would the return pipe bugger things up.

might of been clogged causing the fuel not to be able to return thus flooding the carb mayb??

I know right lol, I just didnt have a spare one around.
A payen set is in order already. Orders for me mean 15+ days (check location)

Yes I have definitely considered it being fuel related, especially after today. I found that if you "choke" the carb with your hand a bit the problem moves up the rev band (say 4800 RPM)
Will follow on the fuel pipes after lunch today.

Yes I've performed all checks on the carb already. Filled it up using a mixture of 50% 20W-50 and 50% 3-in-1 (what i have always used)

There is no fuel return pipe on my mini, but i'll check on the breather pipe at the tank.

As far as mixture goes, nothing has been changed since it was running nicely before the head gasket problem.
I did check the curve at idle and it seems fine (lifting the piston @1/8")

Will do a compression test tomorrow.

What colour are the spark plugs - after a good hard run ? And - have you tried a new set of plugs ???

Would love to get a good run in my mini, lol
But after a drive, pulling to stop with the car off - no idle. The sparkplugs are black but no carbon built.
So I guess its rich. No fuel related then?

Im confused again.

what needle are you using?

perhaps the carb could do with a clean and check the jet for residue.

The choke isnt sticking from the other cables by any chance?
